Attorney Criticizes Judge in Sean Combs’ Trial
Attorney Alan Dershowitz expressed strong criticism of a judge during Sean “P. Diddy” Combs’ trial on Wednesday, claiming the judge was “vindictive” for denying bail to the rapper despite what he considered a weak case from the federal prosecution.
While the jury acquitted Combs of two counts of sex trafficking and one count of assault related to prostitution, Dershowitz argued that the judge’s decision was unjust. He stated, “In my view, this man was convicted of something that isn’t really a crime. There are two counts of interstate travel for immoral purposes, aimed at engaging in prostitution. It wasn’t even prostitution.” He mentioned that, despite any alleged wrongdoing, denying bail seemed unreasonable. “What basis? This guy isn’t going to run anywhere,” he added, noting Combs’ affluent living situation on Star Island, where properties can be valued at $40 to $50 million.
Dershowitz continued to assert that the judge’s actions appeared to be motivated more by personal feelings regarding the verdict rather than the facts of the case. He suggested that Combs might face some time in prison, although he didn’t expect it to be excessive. “He can’t be given a lot of time, but he’ll likely spend some more time than he’s already served,” he reflected.
In the meantime, Combs is scheduled for a hearing regarding the verdict on July 8. He is also dealing with multiple civil lawsuits claiming rape.
Dershowitz later emphasized his belief that an appeal could potentially reverse the outcomes for Combs. “I think a good appeal could win. There are several solid points that can be argued,” he said, asserting that the appellate court has the capabilities to assess the situation outside of the trial’s initial conclusions.
