ALAN DERSHOWITZ: What If Hamas Wins?

What if Hamas is allowed to win this war? What if Hamas were allowed to accomplish what it set out to do through mass murder, kidnapping, and rape? What if the victims of these atrocities – the people of Israel and all the countries fighting terrorism – lose? What if the prospects for peace in the region and the free world are seriously undermined? What if the relationship between the United States and Israel, and the loss of faith in the United States as the guarantor of freedom, continues to be torn apart?

In fact, the Biden administration may be unilaterally rewarding Palestinian terrorists. Palestinian stateOf course, it will soon be militarized.of UNIFIL failure To maintain peace in southern Lebanon, UNRWA Care must be taken in counterterrorism measures in Gaza.

If these are the results of the current war, Hamas will be encouraged to repeat the same. promised to do so “Many times” – the brutal act of October 7th occurred not only in Israel but also in other Western countries, including our own. Why not? If sin is punished, it will be repeated. That's one of the reasons we punish crimes. President Joe Biden said something similar regarding Russia's crimes against Ukraine. He correctly warned that if Putin was allowed to profit from attacking Ukraine, he would be encouraged to attack other countries. Biden is right about that. Why doesn't he say the same about Hamas? Why is he trying to stop Israel from defeating Hamas? Is it fear of losing votes from far-left, anti-Israel Democrats? (Related: Alan Dershowitz: Are we at war with Iran?)

Biden is ignoring pro-Putin voters, but listening to anti-Israel voters. Why is he giving in to the threat of far-left elements within the Democratic Party? Doing so is not only morally and diplomatically wrong; That's politically stupid. These anti-Israel extremists will not decide the outcome of the 2024 presidential election. So will centrist voters, such as those who recently elected Thomas Susie to Congress. And centrist voters support Israel over Hamas.

Anti-Israel leftists are not going to vote for pro-Israel Trump over Biden. It's also unlikely that they'll stay home and help Trump on Election Day. On the other hand, centrist voters are more likely to vote against Biden if they believe he is beholden to the Squad and other woke anti-American extremists.

While the impact of Biden's weakening of support for Israel on domestic elections is important, the international impact is far more significant. If Israel is prevented from overthrowing Hamas and dismantling its military, the world will become an even less safe place. Biden seems to be applying a double standard to the Russian victory, which he rightly says is unacceptable, and the Hamas victory, which he appears willing to tolerate, but which he does not agree with rational U.S. policy and fundamental As a matter of common sense, this cannot be explained.

Mr. Biden must be as dedicated to preventing a Hamas victory as he is to preventing a Russian victory. But that's not his current approach. Instead, he focuses on Gaza's civilian death rate. We also don't know how many innocent civilians are among the dead compared to terrorists and those who support terrorists. It is also unclear how many of the dead were used by Hamas as human shields or killed by unexploded rockets from Gaza. We cannot simply accept the biased numbers released by Hamas propagandists. false informationand found shoot one's own people This was to prevent Israelis from seeking safety in southern Gaza, as urged.

Israel is doing everything that is reasonable. decrease While Hamas attempted an attack, civilians were killed. increase It's on both sides. American policy should not be to tie Israel's hands and help Hamas achieve victory, but to help Israel defeat Hamas and prevent the recurrence and spread of terrorism against civilians.

The tragic reality is that Hamas is winning the war, at least according to its own definition of victory. This has turned world opinion against Israel, especially among young people. It caused a rift in relations between Israel and the United States. The International Court of Justice and the United Nations are also involved. This undermined prospects for peace with Saudi Arabia. It hurt Israel's relations with its neighbors. and strengthened support for Hamas among Palestinians in the West Bank.

The costs were high, but most of it was borne by Palestinian civilians and Israelis. Hamas could not ignore the deaths of Palestinians, as evidenced by the fact that it has never provided shelter to civilians while building vast tunnels. protect your country's combatants. While the world may see the damage inflicted on Gazans as the price of Hamas's victory, Hamas does not see it that way.

Therefore, unless the Biden administration reverses course and encourages Israel to achieve its legitimate military goal of defeating Hamas, terrorism will win and civilization will lose.
