Amtrak is set to introduce two new train services connecting New Orleans and Mobile, marking a significant return to the Gulf region after nearly two decades.
This summer, the state-backed Amtrak Mardi Gras Service will kick off with morning and evening departures from both cities, linking them with Bay St. Louis, Gulfport, Biloxi, and Pascagoula, all while integrating into the broader Amtrak network.
“The Amtrak Mardi Gras Service is a fitting name that celebrates the unique culture of this area,” commented Amtrak President Roger Harris. “Traveling should be more than just a means to an end. Our aim is to embody the festive spirit of Mardi Gras in each journey and share the Gulf’s vibrant culture as we connect to the rest of the Amtrak system.”
Passengers can expect easy access to major Amtrak routes, including connections that allow travel to Chicago in the same day, as well as connections to the Crescent and Sunset Limited lines, both departing from New Orleans.
“Launching the Amtrak Mardi Gras Service not only restores transport links but also honors the vibrant culture and community of the Gulf,” said Joe Donahue, with the Louisiana Department of Transportation Development.
Local leaders have shown enthusiasm for the economic potential of this project.
“Mobile and New Orleans have a shared cultural heritage. Reviving the Amtrak Service will reinforce our connection with Crescent City and the Mississippi Gulf Coast. It’s beneficial for our residents and adds to the appeal of Mobile’s bustling downtown waterfront.”
The Chairman of the Southern Railway Committee, Knox Ross, emphasized the advantages for services in Mississippi and the surrounding area, stating, “This service will enhance our location by opening up new tourist markets along the Mississippi Gulf Coast, supporting local businesses, and strengthening the overall economy in the region.”
Shomari’s figure (D-Ala.) called Mobile’s Mardi Gras a significant investment in both the local economy and tourism, recognizing its cultural impact.
Amenities on board will feature comfortable reclining seats, generous legroom, a good allowance for carry-on baggage, space for golf bags, and the option to bring pets, subject to certain rules.
