Amtrak train derails after striking truck in Moorpark

An Amtrak train collided with a truck and derailed at Moorpark on Wednesday, causing “significant damage,” fire officials said.

The fire occurred near Los Angeles Avenue and Gabbert Road in Moorpark, Ventura County, where the train’s baggage car caught fire, according to fire radio.

Authorities have not released the exact time of the derailment.

A spokesman for the Ventura County Fire Department said a seven-car train had derailed. Firefighters said it collided with a truck before it derailed. The fire department dispatched fire engines, medical personnel, and paramedics to the scene.

At least one crew member was injured and the train was severely damaged, the woman said on the fire radio. Paramedics said the truck driver was able to get out of the vehicle and appeared to be safe.

Video of the incident shows some vehicles were leaning at odd angles to the slope of the hill. The destroyed part of the truck was placed on the track where the train had stopped.

Most of the passengers had left the vehicle, according to fire radio paramedics.

Amtrak did not respond to a request for comment.
