Analysis on the Dallas ICE Shooting
CNN analyst Juliette Kayyam discussed the recent shooting at a Dallas ICE office, noting that the slogans found near the shooter were not enough to definitively indicate his motives.
On Wednesday, two detainees were killed in the incident, with the gunman taking his own life. Brianna Keilar, co-host of “CNN News Central,” asked Kayyam about posts by FBI Director Kash Patel discovered near the shooter, which reportedly included the phrase “anti-ICE.”
“Clearly, they know who it was, and tragically, it was someone who took their life,” Kayyam stated. “Now, we’re trying to gather more information through social media regarding his interactions. Personally, I wasn’t too impressed with the FBI Director’s take.”
Kayyam added, “It feels premature to promote this narrative without knowing all the facts. He made comments surrounding the assassination of Charlie Kirk, which seemed a bit disconnected. It’s helpful to have context, but we should consider it in relation to Charlie Kirk’s comments.”
According to reports, Joshua Yahn, 29, who has a felony conviction for marijuana delivery, has been identified as the shooter.
“There are generations of individuals who exhibit violence in ways that don’t align with typical patterns, and I think this situation underscores that,” Kayyam remarked. “He expressed hatred toward ICE, but that alone doesn’t justify the violence. I’m really looking for a manifesto or a website that he may have centered his thoughts around.”
The Department of Homeland Security stated that the shooter fired shots at the ICE building, resulting in widespread gunfire. “Three detainees were hit; one has died and two others are critically injured,” the DHS reported.
Following several threats, including bomb threats at the Dallas ICE facility earlier this year, this incident has raised ongoing concerns. Ten individuals have been charged with attempted murder related to a previous event.
“It’s time to stop making excuses for law enforcement in the face of these violent events,” DHS Deputy Secretary Tricia McLaughlin commented. “We will have more information soon.”
