Anthony Bruno appointed to Sahuarita School District governing board

The Pima County School Superintendent’s Office has appointed Anthony “Tony” Bruno to the Sawarita Unified School District Board of Governors. Bruno resigned from the board in February and he will succeed Nicole Werner.

Bruno previously served on the board for eight years in the early 2000s, the office of the county school superintendent noted in an email.

“I am thrilled to be back on the board,” said Bruno. “I am here to support all my students and be a team player. Please do not forget.”

Bruno will take office on March 27, and his office is expected to be elected in November 2024. He is eligible to participate in his first board meeting on April 12th.

Tank Verde Unified Art Show

Members of the community are invited to participate in the inaugural Tank Verde Unified Art Show, representing the district-wide art program.

The event will be held on April 19th from 5-7pm at the new Emily Gray Jr. High School Fine and Performing Arts building at 11150 E.Tanque Verde Rd. Sorensen Resource Center at 2300 N. Tanque Verde Loop Rd.

The exhibit will include work by TVUSD students in grades K-8 and TV Community Preschool students representing their vision of an ideal playground. The event will also include an open studio hosted by the Lew Sorensen Adult Community Resource Center Program. PaperPie Learning lets you buy art books, activity books, and art kits for your school fundraiser.

Art and drama students from Tanc Verde High School serve as guides and performers for the art show. The Emily Gray Middle School Orchestra will also perform at the event.

Outstanding Teacher Award

Kobe Henke, 7th and 8th grade mathematics teacher at The Academy of Tucson Middle School, received the Tucson Values ​​Teachers’ Teacher Excellence Award for March.

A Tucson native, Henke began teaching at the Tucson Middle School Academy five years ago after completing her undergraduate studies at Northern Arizona University. She serves as her STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) coordinator at the school and coordinates excursions to Disneyland so students can participate in her behind-the-scenes, real-world STEM experiences.

She was nominated by her parent, Joanna Bradley. Henke said she makes learning fun for students.

“Mrs. Henke’s energy is contagious, her dedication is amazing, and her willingness to help every child she can is exemplary,” Bradley wrote in a nomination statement. “She may look like a student, but this powerhouse does more than just teach math and lead middle school STEM programs.”
