Rough day in court: Supreme Court upholds Jack Daniel’s side in dispute with dog toy maker

WASHINGTON (AP) – The Supreme Court has given whiskey maker Jack Daniel’s a reason to raise his glass. Judges on Thursday gave the company another chance to win a trademark dispute with a maker of dog toys that imitate the distinctive bottle of whiskey. The judges unanimously said the reasoning by which the lower court ruled in favor of the Bad Spaniel toy maker was flawed. The court did not rule on whether the toy maker violated trademark law with a toy that squeaks and resembles a distinctive bottle of whiskey. Instead, the judges said the lower court needed to re-analyze the case and sent the case back for further review.

Utah’s Bible ban spurs protests from parents, Republicans

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Bible-toting parents and Republican lawmakers gathered at the Utah State Capitol to protest a suburban school district that recently announced it had removed Bibles from some schools. The removal of the Bible came after someone took issue with it as a critical commentary on Utah’s new law that allows the book to be challenged. Parents and believers argued Wednesday that verses questioned as being “violent or vulgar” must be judged in context. The protest raised questions about a Utah law that expands the right of residents to challenge certain titles in school libraries, but lawmakers defended the law and said the Bible tangle stemmed from a misunderstanding by officials.
