Apprehend All of Them: Dr. Phil Displays No Compassion for Texas Democrats Leaving the State Due to Redistricting

Dr. Phil Critiques Texas Democrats for Leaving the State

On Monday, Dr. Phil McGraw expressed his criticism of Texas Democrats during an episode of “The Real Story,” particularly taking issue with their decision to flee to a more liberal state like Illinois.

The House Democrats in Texas left in an effort to deny a quorum in the Capitol, which would enable Republicans to draw up a new congressional map potentially allowing them to gain up to five seats. During the episode, Dr. Phil suggested that lawmakers should face arrest for their actions.

He remarked, “I’m not a political scientist, and I can’t delve deeply into gerrymandering, but here’s what I see: Democrats are making things more complicated for themselves and the system. [Republican Texas] Governor Abbott ought to arrest them all. Even if you lean Democrat, we can’t condone such behavior. These individuals were elected to fulfill their responsibilities.”

Dr. Phil added, “If you’re dissatisfied, utilize the courts or vote differently. Don’t just run away. Do your job. To do that, you need to be present. Engage, listen, and express your points without being hypocritical.”

Despite the absence of nine Democrats, the Texas Senate proceeded to approve a new congressional district on Tuesday.

The situation has become increasingly contentious in Texas, as lawmakers face pressures surrounding their retreat to Illinois, known for its strict gerrymandering practices.

On August 4th, the Texas House passed a resolution to issue arrest warrants for lawmakers who failed to show up to vote on the proposed map. On the same day, Governor Abbott instructed the Texas Department of Public Safety to take action against the absent lawmakers, supported by Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton.

Republican Senator John Cornyn from Texas later announced that he would assist in locating the fleeing lawmakers, responding to an FBI request amidst concerns that they may have violated bribery laws by allegedly accepting outside funds.

Doug Shane, a former advisor to President Bill Clinton, voiced his disapproval of the Democrats’ decision to flee. He expressed that it could harm the Democratic brand and pointed out that true fight comes from facing issues head-on. Shane commented, “This sends a troubling message, especially to voters, and it intensifies the stakes.”
