Arickaree’s Jefferson led local 1A contingent with four state titles – Yuma Pioneer

Ali Curry’s Jacob Jefferson capped an arguably illustrious high school track and field career in style.
The most recent 2023 class won all four events at the Class 1A Athletics Championships at Lakewood’s Jefferson County Stadium last weekend.
During his three-year career, Jefferson has competed in up to 12 state events, won eight state titles, and finished fifth or worse in the 2020 freshman season, which was wiped out by COVID-19.
His efforts saw the newly named Bison finish fourth in the final team standings with 57 points. Chello won the team title with 85 points, Dove Creek scored 69 and Sanford scored 60.
Jefferson won the 800m on Friday in a time of 2:2.2.
He completed a trifecta on Saturday.
Jefferson won the 400m in 50.8 seconds. He won the 110m hurdles in 15.78 seconds and the 300m hurdles in 41.55 seconds. He finished his career with three 400m titles and three 110m titles.
“The 400 meant a lot to me because my mom used to run it,” said Shelly Jefferson, a Flagler graduate. Jefferson told Bryan Howell on CHSAANow.com. “You can call me a mommy boy, but I don’t mind. I love my mom and she helped me a lot.
“I was in the high 17s at the 110 hurdles in my second year. I think she came to every track and field competition and supported me no matter what.”
Jefferson enlisted the help of vice-presidential candidate Hayden Page. He finished 3rd in the 800m with a time of 2:04.4 and 7th in the 400m with a time of 52.26s.
In addition, Bryce Shaffer, Keith Page, Austin Wright and Page finished seventh in 4×400 with 3:45.24. The quartet of Shaffer, K. Page, Wright and H. Page finished seventh in the 4×800 with a time of 9:13.72. Schaefer, K. Page, Wright and Clay Axel finished ninth in the 4×200 relay with a time of 1:42.62.
All in all, it was a great run for the Bison at Lakewood.
