Arizona AG revokes drill permits for Saudi company building wells

The battle for Arizona’s water continues, Arizona Attorney General Chris Mays We have more news on this topic this week.

In a recent release to celebrate Earth Day, Mays provided an update on the water use of its Saudi-owned company operating in Arizona.

Mayes broke the news about two applications for new deepwater wells in trust land in the Butler Valley that have been leased to Saudi-owned company Fondomonte. According to Mays, the drilling permit approval has been revoked. They were approved just eight months ago.

“It’s unconscionable that just eight months ago, Arizona approved a new deepwater well designed to pump thousands of gallons of water per minute from beneath La Paz County,” Mayes said. said in the release. “It is long past time for Arizona to wake up and tackle this growing crisis head-on before it is too late.”

The news comes just months after another Mays Saudi declaration caused legal turmoil for Gov. Katie Hobbs.

Mayes nearly made a move at Fondomonte in February, fulfilling one of his campaign promises. However, Hobbes said Mayes did not have the authority to take legal action against the farm.

“This is a very complex issue and frankly, it is not something AG has the authority to do alone,” said Hobbs.
