Arizona Air Force sergeant found dead after going missing during training exercise

A 33-year-old Arizona-based Air Force pilot was found dead in Lake Roosevelt over the weekend, days after he was reported missing during a training exercise, officials said.

Air Force Staff Sgt. was first reported missing during a training exercise in preparation for the assistance of said in a statement.

Many agencies responded, including the Gila County Sheriff’s Office, Tonto Lim Search and Rescue, the U.S. Border Patrol, the Air Force and the Navy, the base said.

355th Wing Commander Col. Scott Mills said Wade’s body was found a few days later on Saturday “after an exhaustive search on Lake Roosevelt.”

“Sergeant Wade was an exemplary airman and consummate professional during his time with the 48th Rescue Squadron and will be greatly missed,” said Mills.

“Our thoughts are with Sergeant Wade’s family, friends and teammates at this difficult time,” he said. We are committed to providing comfort and assistance to our community,” he added.

Wade, who lives in Shortville, New York, entered active service on November 18, 2008 and arrived at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in April 2020, according to the base.

The cause of death was not immediately clear.

The Gila County Sheriff’s Office said the case was under investigation.
