Arizona attorney general battle going down to wire as count winds down

PHOENIX – The Arizona Attorney General’s race was in a near dead heat on Friday with over 99% of the state’s votes counted.

After Maricopa Country received 1,843 votes on Saturday night, Democrat Chris Mays overtook Republican Abe Hamade to lead by 850 votes. Arizona Secretary of State website.

Mayes entered the day with a 570 vote advantage.

Whoever comes out on top, under Arizona election law, the final margin would be close enough to automatically trigger a full recount.

Of the more than 2.5 million votes cast, only about 10,000 were not counted statewide. Estimates of the Office of the Secretary of StateSome of the outstanding ballots are provisional and must be verified. otherwise it won’t count.

Maricopa, Pima and Apache were the only counties that did not complete the tally.

The attorney general is the last undecided major race in the state after incumbent Superintendent of Public Education Kathy Hoffman conceded Thursday morning to Republican challenger Tom Horn.

Mays, an attorney and former Republican who served on the Arizona Business Commission, pledged to tackle issues such as consumer fraud, elder abuse and fentanyl abuse during the campaign.

Hamade, a former prosecutor for the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office, quickly became the frontrunner in the Republican primary after former President Donald Trump endorsed him in June.
