Authorities have charged Nutter with setting fire to this gas station in Ash Fork twice.

Northern Arizona’s Sheriff’s Department has charged Ashfork firefighters with a series of arson charges and has so far charged them with nine separate counts.

Sheriff’s Department investigators in Yavapai and Coconino counties said they had obtained a full confession from firefighter Carson Nutter that he was involved in at least seven arson attacks in both counties.

An Ash Fork gas station and a local cemetery were twice burned. In Coconino County, investigators tied Nutter to two burnt-down homes and two wildfires. Eight arson cases, including four building fires and four wildfires that occurred after June 15, 2023, were all linked in both counties.

Heidi Howard is a spokeswoman for the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office.

In his confession, Nutter said his motives for the arson ranged from boredom, revenge against his former employer, to seeking thrills by setting fire to an abandoned house that was described as ugly.

He said more charges in Coconino County are likely.
