Arizona Game and Fish looking for illegal bighorn sheep poachers

PHOENIX — The Arizona Game and Fish Department is investigating a person who illegally shot and left a bighorn sheep in Apache County.

AZGFD said the ram was found in a quarry near Route 191 in Nutriso West and that the killing occurred between midnight on 28 April and early morning on 29 April. press release.

The department is offering $2,000 for information leading to an arrest, and callers can remain anonymous.

AZGFD said the rewards would come from donations, court fines and civil compensation from wildlife crime offenders.

The Arizona Desert Bighorn Sheep Society, an organization dedicated to protecting the species, is offering an additional $2,500 for information leading to a conviction.

Arizona has an estimated population of about 6,000 bighorn sheep, including both desert and Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep.

Rams are characterized by their large, curved horns.
