Arizona Gov. Hobbs talks to canvassers in Yuma hoping to flip state Legislature blue

Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs made a last-minute trip to Yuma Saturday morning to meet with activists who want to bring the state Legislature back under Democratic control.

Republicans currently have a 31-29 lead in the Arizona House of Representatives, and a 16-14 vote in the state Senate.

The current members of the 23rd Legislative District, which stretches from southern Yuma County to western Maricopa County (Buckeye/Goodyear), are Democrat Mariana Sandoval and Republican Michele Peña. With both candidates running for re-election, state-level Democrats are putting money behind Matias Rosales, who served on the San Luis City Council for 12 years.

Hobbs, a Democrat, has made headlines for vetoing hundreds of bills in the past two years since taking office.

Saturday’s visit was coordinated by the Arizona Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee, which was co-founded in 2012 with then-state Sen. Hobbs.
