Yuma, Arizona (azfamily) – President Donald Trump has updated his threat to impose sudden tariffs on imports from Mexico, which is not sitting well with Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs.
As Mexico is Arizona’s largest trading partner, these tariffs could have a major impact on the state’s economy.
In a state speech in Yuma on Thursday, Hobbs highlighted the importance of Arizona’s relationship with border neighbours, warning that tariffs could have a negative impact on the state’s economy.
“That’s our number one trading partner. That’s obviously very important,” Hobbs said. “They’re going to be devastating. They’ll be passed down to consumers. They won’t make groceries more affordable.”
The governor has also expressed threats to Arizona’s key industries, including semiconductor manufacturing, a sector where the nation has made great strides.
It was also the main reason I visited Yuma on Thursday. She celebrated the groundbreaking of Arizona Western College’s new manufacturing facility.
“The facility will provide training in electrical technology, advanced manufacturing, broadband, fiber optics and solar installations. These are sustainable jobs for stable families.”
