Arizona judge, special master set to preside over crucial water cases

Phoenix — Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Scott Blaney selected a water manager for general stream adjudication, including two significant water incidents in the state.

Blaney, who was recently appointed by the Arizona Supreme Court to oversee cases involving the Gila and Little Colorado river systems, has named Sherry Zendry as a special master, according to a press release.

Zendri assumed a role on March 20th meant to provide additional support for general stream adjudication.

The Common Stream award is the judicial process used to determine the priority and scope of all water rights, the release said.

Blaney was appointed to the Court in 2018 and previously served in the Family and Civil Divisions of the High Court. Before he entered the court, he served as a military attorney for over 30 years.

Zendri has experience as an administrative consultant for the Arizona Lottery and the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality.

Following the general flow ruling, the Superior Court will issue statutes determining water rights in the Little Colorado and Gila river systems.
