Arizona man who held 2 hostages arrested after standoff

PHOENIX — The man holding two hostages was arrested this week after a standoff at a home in northern Arizona.

The Coconino County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 hang-up call around 8:04 pm Monday from the Quarry Road area west of Kaibab Estates north of Ash Fork.

The CCSO said that when officers arrived at the scene, they found the two men in custody against their will.

Officials said Nicolas Barone, 35, was uncooperative and the victims refused to speak to their representatives.

Additional support from the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office and the Arizona Department of Public Safety responded to the scene.

A representative eventually helped the two victims escape from their homes to safety.

The CCSO said Barone fled home after refusing to be detained.

The CCSO said officers had reason to believe Barrone had access to a gun and there was no one else inside, so officers left the house to try to defuse the situation.

It was decided to wait until morning to contact Barone again.

Meanwhile, investigators learned that Barrone was facing multiple felony charges and obtained a search warrant.

The CCSO returned Tuesday morning with the Northern Arizona Regional Tactics Team, the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office, and negotiators.

I could see Barone inside, but he wouldn’t answer the phone or follow orders.

Tactical teams deployed multiple less lethal means during the standoff, including tear gas, police dogs, stun guns and projectiles.

Barone was taken into custody about four and a half hours later. A gun was later found at his home, CCSO said.

The suspect was taken to Flagstaff Hospital for treatment for minor injuries. No other injuries were reported.

After his release, Barrone was imprisoned on two counts of wrongful imprisonment, two counts of disorderly conduct with a weapon, one count of resisting arrest and one count of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, according to the CCSO.
