MARICOPA, Ariz. — A Maricopa police officer was shot dead Thursday, according to the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office. The suspect involved in the shooting is dead, officials said.
The incident occurred near John Wayne Parkway and Bowlin Road. The injured officer was taken to Valley Hospital and is said to be stable, according to officials with the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office.
The suspect is a man between the ages of 35 and 40 who was recently released from prison and has a violent criminal history, officials said.
“All officers involved in the shooting are placed on paid administrative leave, a standard operating procedure,” a statement from the Sheriff’s Office said. He didn’t say how many officers fired the weapons or what led to the shooting.
The Pinal Regional Special Investigations unit is investigating the shooting.
