Arizona regulators green light revised natural gas-fired plant expansion

The Arizona Public Works Regulator has issued a modified environmental certificate for the proposed expansion of the Salt River Project (SRP). The expansion will add 12 FastStart natural gas-fired units to the existing Coolidge Power Station in Pinal County.

The Arizona Business Commission had rejected the SRP’s previous proposal in 2022, citing residents’ concerns about emissions and air quality.

This new development comes after several concessions by SRP. The utility will reduce the number of generating units for expansion from 16 to 12, move the location of the new units slightly to make them less visible to the community, and limit operational use of the new Coolidge power station units to 30%. I will agree with you. Capacity utilization.

The SRP also agreed to provide additional mitigation efforts and additional financial support to neighboring historically black community Randolph.

The utility said it would finance the construction of the Randolph Community Center and add additional air pollution controls, including more road paving to offset the dust in the area.

The 575 MW Coolidge Expansion Project will help support the integration of solar, wind and storage resources.

The SRP has committed to adding 2,025 MW of solar and wind power and 1,100 MW of storage battery capacity by 2025. The company has pledged that more than 75% of the energy supplied to SRP customers will come from carbon-free sources by his 2035.
