Phoenix (3TV/CBS 5) — Sheriffs from two southern Arizona counties briefed members of the Arizona House of Representatives on Wednesday afternoon about the current situation at the Arizona-Mexico border.
Cochise County Sheriff Mark Dannels and Yuma County Sheriff Leon Willmott provided an update during a special joint session for state legislators. The session was requested by Republican Rep. Tim Dunn, who represents the 13th District community that includes Yuma.
The briefing came nearly two weeks after the Lukeville Port of Entry resumed operations after a month-long closure due to a surge of migrants at the border. Days later, U.S. authorities reported that illegal border crossings had “dramatically decreased” due to increased enforcement by Mexican authorities.
The Cochise County Sheriff's Office has reported numerous incidents involving human smuggling and drug trafficking operations in recent months. In late September and early October, two CCSO deputies were injured in separate incidents involving suspected smuggling.
Sheriff Dannels later announced new partnerships with other law enforcement agencies in Arizona to fight border-related crimes, saying, “Enough is enough.”
