Arizona Tribal water systems granted millions in federal grants

PHOENIX — Interior Secretary Deb Harland this week announced several investments in Arizona, along with millions of dollars in funding for tribal water and sanitation systems, irrigation improvements and dam safety projects in five U.S. states. .

Ahead of the announcement, Harland toured the Hopi Keems Canyon Water Project in northern Arizona.

“To address chronic infrastructure funding shortfalls among tribal communities, the President’s investment plan for the United States will set record levels to provide modern sewage and sanitation systems, clean drinking water, and reliable and affordable electricity. We’re rolling out investments,” Harland said in the paper. press release.

The funding will come from a $1.2 trillion bipartisan infrastructure act that will provide $6.6 million to repair and upgrade water and sanitation facilities in Navajo County’s Keames Canyon.

The funds will be used to replace fire hydrants and water pipes, install automatic water meters, connect water systems and Hopi arsenic mitigation projects.

HAMP is a water supply system that replaces arsenic-contaminated water found in Keems Canyon wells.

An additional $5 million will be used to remedy known safety deficiencies at A1 Dam, Bootleg Dam, Cooley Dam, Christmas Tree Dam, and Davis Dam on Fort Apache Reservation.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs also distributed $1 million each to the Power Division of the San Carlos Irrigation Project and Power Services of the Colorado River Authority.
