FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Northern Arizona residents may wake up to a flurry of snow on Christmas morning as light snow is expected. Precipitation is expected starting Tuesday night in areas above 6,500 feet, including Flagstaff, raising the possibility of a white Christmas for the region.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Flagstaff, snow showers are expected Tuesday evening, with up to an inch of snow expected to accumulate in some areas. Snowfall is expected to ease by Christmas morning, and roads could become slippery. Travel along Interstate 40 and State Route 89 may be affected during this time.
Tuesday night’s low will drop to 28°F and rain will turn to snow as temperatures drop. Wind gusts up to 16 mph may reduce visibility, especially at higher elevations. Residents planning holiday travel are advised to closely monitor road conditions and prepare for possible delays.
The Christmas weather will also bring cooler temperatures on Christmas Day, with highs near 45°F. Although light snowfall is expected, the NWS warns that untreated roads and sidewalks could freeze overnight, creating dangerous conditions for drivers and pedestrians.
Looking ahead, temperatures are expected to remain cool throughout the week, with another light chance of snow late Thursday night into Friday morning. Highs will remain in the mid 40s, with overnight lows dropping into the teens.
