An Arizona woman has been accused of poisoning the coffee of a U.S. Air Force operative who was estranged for months with bleach, according to court documents.
Melody Johnson was arrested on July 18 after she turned over a video showing her husband pouring toxic substances into his coffee machine.
The husband, whose name is not listed in the court documents, began noticing that the coffee tasted bad at the end of March 2023 while stationed in Germany.
Johnson and her husband are considering divorce, but were living with their children.
After drinking coffee for 2-3 weeks, my husband tested the water in the faucet using chemical test strips and it was back to normal. Court documents say she tested the water in her coffee pot and found “high levels of chlorine.”
In May 2023, her husband installed a camera in her home that showed Ms. Johnson “pouring something into the coffee pot.” According to her complaint, the man pretended to drink coffee until his family returned to the United States on June 28 because he didn’t want to file a report in Germany.
On July 5, while the husband was temporarily stationed at a hotel at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson, he set up another camera and Mr. Johnson “walked to the coffee maker and poured something into the reservoir.” It is said that the scene was shown again. Her husband filed a complaint with the police. She reported the next day, but officers said they weren’t sure what Johnson was pouring into the coffee pot.
When the family moved into their permanent home on July 7, the husband installed more cameras in the ceiling that looked like fire alarms, according to court documents. Johnson was arrested by Tucson police and charged with attempted first-degree murder, attempted aggravated assault, and adulteration of food and drink. She is being held at the Pima County Adult Detention Center, according to online records.
A search warrant was executed and a container was found under the bathroom sink in Johnson’s bedroom that smelled like bleach and contained liquid. There was also a liquid inside the coffee maker that smelled like bleach, according to court documents.
