Arizona’s ‘Umbrella Lady’ killed in crash, suspect arrested

Lydia Reiss, known in the Tucson community as the “Umbrella Lady,” was killed last Thursday after being hit by a car.

TUCSON, Arizona — Authorities have confirmed the death of a woman who was hit by a car on the northwest side of Tucson last Thursday.

On Monday, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department said: Lydia Reis, 63, has died After causing a hit-and-run accident at the intersection of Ina Highway and Jaconda Highway,

Reiss was known in the Tucson community as the “Umbrella Lady” because she was often seen walking the streets of Pima County with a large umbrella. PCSD says she succumbed to her injuries on Sunday.

The suspect has been identified as 53-year-old Guadalupe Solis. She is being held at the Pima County Jail for leaving the scene of the accident.

In a news release on Monday, the PCSD said Solis was traveling east on Ina Road when he bumped into Reis, who was walking along the road.

ADOT provides a website with driving tips to keep people safe on the road.

“There is always room for improvement when it comes to road safety,” the ministry said on its website.

ADOT’s suggestions include:

  • Do not speed or drive recklessly
  • Do not drive under the influence of substances
  • avoid distractions while driving
  • Wear your seatbelt and make sure all passengers do the same
  • If an emergency vehicle is parked on the shoulder of the road, move
  • Be especially careful in the work zone
  • Be prepared for weather conditions that make driving dangerous
