In Yabapai County, two ongoing projects launched by the Arizona Department of Forestry Fire Control (DFFM) are taking aggressive measures to mitigate the risk of destructive wildfires. One such effort, Ruger Ranch Phase 2, includes 2,500 acres of land, including a chewy operation aimed at alleviating the thick chaparral that has dominated the area. The locations sitting on State Trust land north of People’s Valley, southwest of Kirkland Junction, and west of SR 89 are important to community safety. Despite the possibility of delays due to weather and fire constraints, work is expected to be completed by July 2025, and warning signs for contractor activities will be publicly located near the roads of Luger and Sorrels on SR 89. It will be a scene like this. DFFM Statement.
That much behind is Granite Oaks Phase 2, a 960-acre project just nine miles northwest of Prescott and 2.5 miles southeast of Williamson Community. The main purpose of this project is to reduce the connectivity of dense and dangerous fuels within wild urban interfaces (WUIs) via mastisense. By dividing the continuity of vegetation, efforts are expected to prevent the spread of fires and reduce the strength, and translate into safer and more controlled fire control operations. This strategically designed initiative aims to partner with previous mitigation measures taken near the granite Oaks community. Road closures are not on the agenda, but residents need to remain vigilant about transporting heavy machinery. The completion of this project is covered in December 2025 subject to unexpected delays.
These important measures taken by DFFM are within the priority goals of protecting residential areas, improving the health of native plants, and protecting essential infrastructure from the ever-present threat of wildfires . Luger Ranch Phase 2 and granite Oaks Phase 2 represent a greater commitment to strategic fuel reduction efforts across the state.
