Irvin Karl Schultz passed away on March 21, 2023 in his beloved city of Phoenix, Arizona. “Arv” was born on November 21, 1934 at Elmhurst Hospital in Elmhurst, Illinois. He spent the first 28 years of his life in Addison, Illinois. As a young man, he became a police officer for the Addison Police Department and soon met Nona, his third grade schoolteacher in Addison. During their courtship, Alve became the Deputy Sheriff of the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office. After their marriage on June 16, 1962, Alve and Nonnie moved to Phoenix, Arizona. In 1966 his Arv aviation career began. He worked as a flight instructor for his Sawyer Aviation and flew as a co-pilot for Apache Airlines and later Bonanza Airlines. He worked as an instructor in his program at Lufthansa, started Carefree Air Services, flew with Hughes Air West, and many airline mergers led him to join Northwest Airlines (now Delta Air Lines). ended his 26-year captaincy career. He started his Flyways magazine in Arizona after the FAA ordered him to retire at age 60. This eventually became America’s Flyways, which he issued for 13 years.
