Attempted murder suspect accused of drive-by shooting formally charged

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) – A Yuma man accused of nearly killing a 17-year-old girl in a drive-by shooting was formally arraigned in court on Tuesday.

David Garcia, 40, was originally arrested on a total of 13 felony charges, but was formally charged Tuesday with only one count of attempted first-degree murder.

According to the Yuma Police Department (YPD), the drive-by shooting happened in March of this year in the Foothills near East 38th Lane and Avenue 8E.

Police said the girl who was shot is still recovering but have not said whether she has been released from the hospital.

YPD said the case remains under investigation and open.

“If anyone has surveillance video or a Ring camera, we ask that they call the Yuma Police Department and share that information so we can continue our investigation,” Yuma police spokeswoman Christina Fernandez said.

Garcia is scheduled to appear in court again later this week and is currently being held in the Yuma County Jail on $500,000 bail.
