Auburn achieves a solid victory against Baylor as Jackson Arnold shines.

Auburn Kicks Off Third Year Under Freeze with Victory Over Baylor

Auburn launched its third year under head coach Hugh Freeze with a 38-24 win against Baylor in Waco on Friday night. This game also marked the debut season for new quarterback Jackson Arnold.

The Tigers had previously struggled with their passing game, yet they really dominated on the ground, and Arnold played a significant role in that success. After a quick 3-0 deficit, Arnold managed to score the season’s first points with a 24-yard run late in the first quarter, putting Auburn ahead.

The second quarter saw Auburn extend its lead to 14-3, thanks to a rushing touchdown by Damali Alston, leading many to think they might run away with the game.

As the first half came to a close, former Alabama transfer Kobe Prentiss made a crucial play with a long touchdown reception for Baylor, narrowing Auburn’s lead to just a score after a field goal, making it 17-10 at halftime.

In the second half, both teams exchanged touchdowns, with Auburn pulling ahead by 14 points once more, only for Baylor to close the gap to seven again, highlighted by a kick-off return touchdown from Rayshaun Pleasant.

Baylor remained competitive, threatening to tie the game, but Auburn’s defense stood strong, converting crucial third downs and limiting Baylor’s opportunities.

The defining moment of the night came when Arnold dashed through the line again, scoring his second touchdown of the night with a 27-yard run on fourth down, effectively sealing the victory.

Arnold ended the game with 16 carries for 137 yards and led the team in rushing with over 300 total yards. Alston contributed 84 yards, while Jeremiah Cobb added another 74.

In the passing department, Arnold completed 11 of 17 attempts for 108 yards, indicating there’s still work to be done. However, Auburn’s ability to avoid turnovers and secure the win is a strong start to the season—one that the Tigers can build on moving forward.
