Auburn destroys South Carolina for biggest win over ranked team in program history

The Auburn Tigers got back on track with a 101-61 victory over No. 11 South Carolina on Valentine's Day night.

This big win was good for Auburn as its biggest win over a ranked opponent in the entire history of the program.

Auburn is 13-0 at home this season, 20-5 overall and 9-3 in the SEC.

The Tigers were firing on all cylinders from the start, leading 50-28 at halftime against a Gamecocks team that hadn't allowed more than 40 shots in the first half all season. South Carolina allowed just 64 points per game, ranking eighth in the nation in scoring defense.

The second half would be a similar result for Auburn, which would break the Gamecocks' previous first-half total of 51 points in the second frame.

It was the usual players who put up big numbers for the Tigers, with Jaylin Williams scoring 16 points in the first half and finishing with 23 points, while Joni Bloom had 21 points and two blocks.

Dylan Cardwell wowed the crowd with eight points, five assists, and four blocks, including an alley-oop slam near the end of the game.

“If we can get nine three-balls from our starting frontcourt, it kind of makes everything we're trying to do offensively work,” Auburn head coach Bruce Pearl said after the game.

“It makes it hard to guard you, because what are you doing? If you don't switch, we're going to take that shot. If you switch, you're going to have a mismatch internally. I guess.”

The Tigers made 12-of-20 shots (60%) from the 3-point line and 36-of-59 (61%) from the field, and everything seemed to be in their favor, but the Shamcocks were unable to reach the 3-point line. He shot just 3 of 15 (20%) from the field. 18 of 52 (34.6%) were from the field.

Auburn is currently tied for second place in the conference with South Carolina at 9-3, but is still a half-game behind Alabama at 9-2.

Pearl's group has another big game coming up at home this Saturday, taking on Kentucky at Neville Arena starting at 5:00 PM CST on ESPN.
