Auburn star wins Ben Hogan award as nation’s top golfer

The Auburn University Tigers men's golf team had a sensational season, winning their first SEC title since the 2017-18 season.

Freshman Jackson Coyvan was a big factor and he was recognized for his contributions with the Ben Hogan Award, which recognizes the top male collegiate golfer based on collegiate, amateur and professional events over the past 12 months.

Koibun becomes only the second rookie to win the prestigious award, joining Oklahoma State University and PGA star Rickie Fowler, who won the award in 2008.

He finished in the top 10 in 11 of his 12 starts this season, won the SEC Individual Championship and also had a strong showing at the 2023 U.S. Amateur last July.

Amazingly, Koiven played 26 rounds under par, averaging a score under 70 on the year and recording 164 birdies.

Perhaps the most impressive thing about winning the Hogan Award is that Koivun's name was recently added to the list of recipients of this great achievement award.

Ludvig Aberg (the 2022-23 winner) is already a star on the PGA Tour, having finished second in last month's Masters Tournament. Sahith Teegala, who tied for first place at last Saturday's PGA Championship, won in 2020, and Viktor Hovland, who came in third, won in 2019.

Two-time major champion Jon Rahm also won the award in 2016.

It's fair to say that Auburn has a fantastic young player in Jackson Coyvan, and this is a huge accomplishment for both him and the entire program.
