The Auburn Tigers boast a proud soccer tradition and are known for their incredibly passionate fanbase in college football.
Debatably, no one has had a greater impact on the program throughout its history than Cam Newton, who clinched the Heisman trophy.
The 2010 season, which led the Tigers to a national championship, is often cited as one of the most exceptional in college football history, contributing to Auburn’s status among the elite programs in the nation.
Interestingly, Newton had not been among the select few Tiger legends to have their jerseys retired at Jordan-Hare Stadium. It had been quite some time since anyone wore No. 2 for Auburn, but that’s changed this year.
In an engaging video, AU Athletics Director John Cohen and Associate Athletics Director Tim Jackson shared this exciting news with Newton, ensuring he was the first to know.
This year, Newton’s jersey joins the others hanging in the rafters: Bo Jackson’s No. 34, Pat Sullivan’s No. 7, and Terry Beasley’s No. 88.
“Auburn will always be my home,” Newton remarked. “Winning the national championship in 2010 was an unforgettable experience. Having my jersey retired alongside legends like Pat Sullivan, Bo Jackson, and Terry Beasley is something I will treasure forever. War Eagle.”
“Cam Newton didn’t just guide Auburn to national glory in 2010; he also had one of the most remarkable seasons in college football history,” Cohen stated. “Retiring Cam’s jersey number is a wonderful way to honor his lasting influence on Auburn University and its athletics.”
During his time on campus, Newton also had the chance to connect with current head coach Hugh Freeze and visit with the players.
