Auburn University agriculture students become summer interns with the Federation.

On May 20th, the Alabama Farmers Federation welcomed two Auburn University seniors, Cohen Rooker and Jonathan Parten, as summer interns. They’re set to assist the organization with grassroots efforts, focusing on policy development and legislative matters.

Rooker, hailing from Talladega County, is involved with the Government and Agricultural Program (GAP) department. His role includes supporting the Commodity Directors in policy initiatives and preparing for the upcoming Farm & Land Conference.

Mitt Walker, director of the GAP Department, praised Rooker’s agricultural background. Walker noted, “Cohen’s family has been part of the Talladega County Farmers’ Federation for many years. We’re eager to utilize his farm experience to support farmers across the state this summer.”

At 22, Rooker has been working with the family’s farm, Luker Family Farms, since 2010. He’s currently pursuing a degree in agricultural business and economics at Auburn University, specializing in Small Crops and Soil Science.

Staying engaged with agricultural organizations is vital for Rooker. He emphasized the importance of connectivity with young farmers and cattle owners at Auburn. “Growing up on farms and attending agricultural events sparked my passion for farming,” Rooker mentioned. “We’re excited to explore Alabama’s diverse agricultural products, meet industry leaders, and collaborate with the GAP team to shape agricultural policy.”

Parten, 21, from Lee County, will be working alongside the federation’s foreign and organizational departments. His leadership at Auburn is expected to be beneficial, according to Brian Hardin, head of the Federation Foreign Affairs Department.

Hardin stated, “As the president of Auburn Agriculture, Jonathan understands the significance of advocating for our state’s agriculture. He’ll be a valuable asset to the team, and I’m excited to see how his insights can assist farmers.”

Parten has a strong engagement with Auburn and is majoring in agricultural business and economics, along with a minor in political science. He’s involved in several organizations and serves as an Agricultural Ambassador for the university.

According to Jimmy Parnell, President of the Federal and Alpha, these young individuals represent the future of Alabama agriculture. He remarked, “Real-world experiences significantly contribute to student success. Cohen and Jonathan are building relationships with Alabama farmers and industry leaders that will be crucial for their future.”
