Authorities shoot and kill man in continued search for missing Prescott man

Lake Havasu police shot and killed a man they encountered Wednesday while searching for a missing Prescott man.

The Coconino County Sheriff’s Office reported 66-year-old Russell Vinton missing after he failed to return from a camping trip on Jacob Lake.

Deputies inspected his campsite and found “suspicious” items that raised concerns for his welfare.

The next day, Lake Havasu police found Vinton’s truck 300 miles away in an area known as Craggy Wash.

The sheriff’s office said a person in the truck opened fire as deputies approached. They fired back, killing 61-year-old Tennessee champion Patrick Neal.

The shooting remains under investigation. CCSO said it is working with the Lake Havasu City and Bullhead City Police Departments to determine “the circumstances that led to this incident.”

Vinton is still missing. He is 6 feet tall, weighs approximately 170 pounds, and has brown hair and eyes. His white 2017 travel trailer with Arizona license plate 5LA50N is also missing.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office at 928-774-4523 or Silent Witness at 928-774-6111.
