Avila, Brei finalists for Safford Police Chief job

Safford — The city of Safford’s search for a new police chief has been narrowed to two candidates, and the city is hosting a meeting for the public to learn more about the man.

The finalists for the job are Safford Police Chief Brian Avila and University of Arizona Police Chief Jason Bray.

Avila has worked in law enforcement for 22 years and started her career in her hometown of Clifton. He moved to Safford Police Department in 2006 and worked his way up through the ranks until 2020 when he was promoted to Captain.

Avila holds an associate’s degree in judicial administration from EAC and a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice management from Bellevue University. She has also participated in the FBI LEEDA program for She Commands She Leadership, and the Arizona Her Leadership Program.

Brei has a 23-year career in law enforcement as a lieutenant in the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office. In 2000, he transferred and was promoted to the University of Arizona Police Department.

Brei holds a Master of Management degree in Public Management and a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from Northern Arizona University. Also in 2010 she completed the FBI National Academy.
