AWC accepting 60 nursing students per semester

Previously, AWC’s nursing program accepted only 40 students each semester.

Yuma, Arizona (KYMA, KECY) – Arizona Western College (AWC) has expanded its nursing program to accommodate an additional 20 students each semester due to a shortage of nurses.

In spring 2023, AWC will begin accepting 60 students into its nursing program and currently has 54 students enrolled.

AWC said the program only admits 40 students each year in the fall and spring.

“Yuma County is a rural area that needs more healthcare workers, especially as our community continues to grow,” said Cynthia Alvarez, AWC Director of Nursing. “Our community partners have received the expansion very well, so it is exciting to lead the nursing program in the expansion. The university is excited to continue serving the Yuma community.”

According to AWC, the employment rate for 2021 program graduates was 97.6%, and the employment rate in Yuma County was 82.6%.
