Seeing a baby in pain is painful and many of us have an urge to help. If that baby happens to be an animal, many of us are quick to believe that we might be able to help.

Recently, an Arizona teenage girl learned the painful lesson that wildlife care is better left to Mother Nature or a qualified professional. She’s also a baby wild animal.

A teenage girl from Sahuarita has found a baby coyote believed to have been abandoned by her mother. When she found it, she tried to take it to safety, but was bitten on the way and things took a turn for the worse.

Coyote babies looked cute and helpless, but their bites had serious consequences. In a recent tweet, the Arizona Department of Game and Fish said, “This pup’s mother likely left her alone for a moment to feed.”

The boy is currently being treated for rabies. The nature of rabies necessitated the culling of coyote pups to reduce the potential for spread. Authorities follow agency policy to conduct rabies brain tests whenever humans are bitten or scratched by a wild animal.

Authorities were unable to release the pups back into the wild. Too much time had passed and the mother was unable to retrieve it, the agency reported.

If you see a coyote or other baby animal, leave it alone. Many animal mothers leave their young alone for short periods of time to feed, but it is quite possible that the mother will return.
