Azerbaijan President Accuses Western NGO Of ‘Coup’ Attempt, Corporate Media Spreading ‘Anti-Azerbaijani Propaganda’

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has denounced the US-based nonprofit that has allegedly plotted multiple major news about the publication of the “coup” and “anti-Azabaijani propaganda,” according to a press conference on Thursday.

Speaking in “Facing the New World Order” forum On April 9, at ADA University in Baku’s capital, Aliyev accused the National Institute of Democracy (NDI) of paying for apartments of “opposition activists” in the country. He also accused the Washington Post and the New York Times of France’s outlets Le Figaro and Le Monde of “fake news,” reiterating the characteristics of President Donald Trump’s media.

“We actually didn’t fully control the financial flow of these funds, which was why notorious institutions like the National Institute of Democracy (NDI) were actually planning a coup here,” Aliyev said in the forum. “It was detected. We tracked over USD 1 million from our bank account. It was cashed out. And we found some of that money in the rental apartment of opposition activists, along with instructions on how to attack Molotov cocktails and government buildings, and how to attack police.”

The President of Azerbaijan also claimed that following the end of President Joe Biden’s term, the press has “stop publishing all ugly articles about Azerbaijan.” He also argued that the source of the article came from the State Department.

So far, Aliyev has not produced any concrete evidence in support of his accusation. (Related: The president of the country hosting the UN Climate Summit defends fossil fuels, slum media and green “hypocrisy”)

He also attacked the US International Aid Agency (USAID). This was called a “completely corrupt structure” and attacked other international nonprofits.

“But that’s not enough. You should go deeper,” Aliyev said. “Human Rights Watch, Freedom House, Amnesty International, Transparent International – all this infrastructure of his political enemy must be completely dysfunctional.”

Aliyev also said he would provide U.S. law enforcement with “all information about the illegal and destructive activities of Trump’s predecessor” citing “illegal conduct” by some embassy workers.

The Trump administration sent a letter to Aliyev on April 10th. Reconfirm Diplomatic relations between the two countries.

“Our country has a long history of working together, and we look forward to the amazing things we can achieve in the next few years,” Trump said in the letter. “We appreciate your support and friendship with Azerbaijan’s partner Israel and praise the steps you and Armenia are taking to bring peace to the region.”
