TUCSON, Ariz. (KGUN) — Hundreds of backpacks were handed out to students this morning during the back-to-school bash at the Quincy Douglas Center.
The event was sponsored by Tucson’s 5th District Council Office and Tucson Parks and Recreation. The goal was to help prepare Tucson students for the upcoming school year by providing them with the goods, services and information they need.
“Events in Tucson are there because we want people to know there’s something to do in Tucson,” said Ron Barton, former director and administrator of the Tucson Parks and Recreation Authority. “You know Tucson has backpack drives, but you know it’s not all in Phoenix. We do a lot here in Tucson.”
In addition to handing out backpacks, students received haircuts, sports health checkups, vaccinations for uninsured children, and information on low-income assistance.
