The Prescott Badgers became Grand Canyon Region champions for the first time since 2012 with a 35-28 victory over the Coconino Panthers on a cold and laundry-filled senior night at Prescott High School.

Quarterback Urijah Tenet scored what would become the winning touchdown on a 37-yard run with just under two minutes remaining. Tenet almost went over the line, but stayed within and outran the last two defenders for a touchdown. Tenet rushed for 167 yards with two touchdowns and also threw for a TD. “My intention was to do just that and get the lead and get out, but at that moment I saw a space and went for it,” he said. The senior signal caller knew the stakes were pretty high tonight. “We really wanted this game. It was senior night and after a disappointing 4-6 finish last year, knowing we could be regional champions was huge. . Coconino is always a tough opponent, so we have to play hard against them.”
Adam Lloyd had a big game gaining 154 yards on 32 carries and scoring the first two touchdowns on runs of 4 and 3 yards to give Prescott a 14-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. Ta.
The Badgers’ defense, led by Brody Hanna and Cooper Cousin with nine tackles each, followed by Isaac Briseno and Adam Lloyd with eight, kept the Panthers’ offense in check in the first quarter and made several tackles in the second half. made a big stop.
Coconino got the rebound on a 3-yard run by Fernando Ramirez. Jose Miguel Villanueva added the kick for a 14-7 lead.

Prescott extended the lead to 21-7 when Tenet scored on a 47-yard pass play to Josiah Peoples, pushing the lead back to 14 points. It was the second consecutive pass to Peoples that was intercepted on the previous play without throwing the flag. Peoples caught two of Tenet’s three completions that night for 82 yards. The other reception went to Eli Allen for 8 yards. “I thought I had to show something because my family was from California, so I thought catching a touchdown pass would be a good idea. The ball was right where it needed to be,” Peoples said. We took the ball from there. It was a great night for our seniors and our team.”
A 20-yard pass from Coconino quarterback Colton Buckingham to Asher Young in the corner of the end zone gave the Panthers a 21-14 lead. Prescott’s offense did a great job of using the clock to gain yards with little time left. Tenet jumped past four defenders on a 13-yard run on the home side to take a 28-14 lead at the half.
Noble Young Black Goat pulled Coconino within 28-21 with an 11-yard run. After Prescott was forced to punt, Isaac Briseno stepped in front of the receivers and picked off Buckingham’s pass. Briseno had plenty of open field in front, but was tripped up by a shoestring tackle. I thought I could score a goal, but I stumbled. ” Briceno said of the win and regional championship. One of our goals was to win this region, but we still have a lot of work ahead of us. ”
The Badgers could have put the score up by two and opted to go for an 18-yard chip shot field goal rather than attempt a fourth down play. The Panthers blocked the kick and got the ball back with just a seven-point lead and ruined it.
Prescott’s defense rose to the occasion and forced a three-and-out. After the first first down, a third-down play provided the extra punch the Badgers needed at the time. Tenet rolled to the far side, got a first down, and even though it looked like he was going to go wide, he took off toward the end zone and took a 35-21 lead.
After Tenet picked off Buckingham’s pass, Coconino caught the break. Offsetting penalties resulted in a replay of the down. The Panthers pulled within seven points on Buckingham’s 1-yard run with 48 ticks left. The onside kick was recovered by Kenny Miller-Terry. As the Badgers celebrated their victory, Tenet killed off the final seconds with two snaps and a knee kick.
Prescott, ranked No. 7 this week, has a chance to move up a spot or two after losses to No. 4 Arcadia and No. 6 Northwest Christian. The Badgers travel to Cottonwood on Friday to face Mingus in their final regular season game at 7 p.m. Coconino hosts Flagstaff.
