Barry Goldberg, Former Keyboard Player For Bob Dylan, Dead At 83

Barry Goldberg, the famous keyboardist who collaborated with Bob Dylan, has died at the age of 83.

A representative for Goldberg confirmed that Goldberg passed away in hospice on Wednesday. According to On TMZ. The talented musician was surrounded by loved ones at the time of his passing, including his wife Gail and son Aram. According to TMZ, the blues-rock performer battled non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma for 10 years before passing away.

Goldberg left his mark on the American music scene in the ’60s as a member of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band. He was most recognized for playing keys for Dylan at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival.

The historical performance was also highly controversial. Dylan was famously booed by the crowd for his disappointing statement that he had exchanged his acoustic guitar for an electric one in favor of an electric one. Dylan was accused of betraying his signature sound by playing in an electric band with Goldberg. The band pushed on and performed “Rike a Rolling Stone” live for the first time. This song became one of the best works of all time. The moment was recreated for the 2024 biopic, Complete Unknown, which was created as a depiction of Dylan’s life. The character of George was played by actor Justin Levine.

In addition to his talent on the keyboard and his relationships with iconic stars, Goldberg was also recognized for his talent as a record producer. He has worked on albums with Percy Sledge, Charlie Musselwhite, James Cotton, and Text. According to TMZ, he also produced “People Get Ready,” a version of Dylan’s “People Get Ready.”

Goldberg briefly played in a band with Steve Miller in 1965 and appeared on Leonard Cohen’s 1977 album Death of a Ladies’ Man. He played keys for the Ramones on the “Century of the Century” album and produced the cover of Curtis Mayfield’s “People Get Ready,” which Dylan recorded for the hit film “Flashback.”
