Farming is a crucial part of Alabama’s economy and lifestyle. From the peanut fields in Wiregrass to the cattle ranches in the Black Belt, agriculture isn’t just an industry here; it’s a calling.
I was raised on a farm in Coffee County and later studied poultry science at Auburn University, where I learned the ins and outs of working with producers to effectively deliver products. I understand that agriculture goes beyond a job; it’s about feeding America, caring for the land, and ensuring there’s something to pass on to future generations.
Since I began my time in Congress, I’ve been an active member of the Agriculture Committee and have aimed to tackle the various challenges that farmers encounter. I took the lead in advocating for changes to the harmful wage rate methodology affecting H-2A farm workers and pushed back against regulations from the Biden administration that would raise the cost of labor for farmers.
Alabama farmers are already dealing with rising input prices. The administration’s proposed changes would only add more financial strain.
Moreover, there is a need for reforms that genuinely enhance the well-being of rural communities. I resonate with the law aimed at expanding our disaster insurance program, and I support efforts to deal with wild pig populations while allowing local utilities to better serve families in Alabama.
I advocate for legislation that safeguards farmland from foreign adversaries, modernizes forestry data, and ensures access for hunters and anglers who support our outdoor economy. Through a significant bill from President Trump, farmers will benefit from increased compensation guarantees against agricultural risks; they deserve a robust safety net.
Every decision I make, every meeting I attend, and every letter I sign is guided by a singular principle: to equip Alabama farmers with the necessary tools and freedom for success.
Yet, beyond the bills I’ve backed and the letters I’ve written, it’s really about the relationships I’ve forged with those I represent.
It’s crucial for me to maintain connections with agricultural groups and producers across the state.
I’ve toured numerous farms in Alabama, gathered firsthand insights on what works and what doesn’t, and hosted discussions with farmers, ranchers, and agribusiness leaders to ensure their concerns influence policy. I strive to prioritize their needs, not just during farm bill negotiations, but in all facets of discussion, from enhancing crop insurance to regulatory reform.
Organizations like the Alabama Farmers Federation (ALFA), the Alabama Cattle Association, Southern Cotton Growers, and the Alabama Peanut Producers Association have been instrumental in providing vital feedback. Their members are deeply involved in agriculture daily. I’m proud to collaborate with them to deliver real results for Alabama farmers.
Together, we can strengthen Alabama’s farms and create new opportunities for future producers.
The challenges we face in agriculture are real, but I believe Alabama growers are more than capable of tackling them head-on.
Equipping our farmers with the resources they need to continue their work is one of my top priorities. I look forward to the House Agriculture Committee advancing the Farm Bill 2.0 to build on the good work we’ve initiated with past legislation.
When our farmers thrive, Alabama prospers, and I will continue to advocate for our farming community.
