Comedian Bill Maher told News Nation host Chris Cuomo on Sunday’s podcast.
The former governor faced accusations of underreporting the number of deaths in the state’s nursing home after his administration’s instructions that allowed thousands of Covid-19 positive patients to enter the facility. Maher,Club RandomHe said that the issue is politically insurmountable for Cuomo’s mayoral bid, but the reporting host disagreed. “I like him. He’s been on my show a few times now. I did a panel. I think it was great. I don’t think he’s going to pass the nursing home,” Maher said. “I mean, I read a New York paper. When the era and posts are on the same page, you know that.”
Maher added that he does not believe the former governor acted maliciously in his administration’s nursing home policy.
“Politics is a high-wire act. Yeah, so that one Bonner decision can be made, yeah, people say, ‘I’m sorry, I can’t trust that guy’s judgment,’ he said,” he said. “I don’t know what happens when fucking.”
The News Nation host said he doesn’t believe the scandal will “decided the race.”
“Yes,” retorted Marhel.
“I think he’s putting a lot of pressure on him within that party and they’ll need to decide whether they want to take power or whether they want to police their beliefs within their party,” the News Nation host said. “I mean, that’s what they have to decide. What are they about as a party? I’m not a party fan. I’m not a Democrat fan. I don’t think they’re a party in long shots at my dad’s party.”
The NewsNation host also pointed out the advantage of his brother’s vote. March 26th Emerson College Polling/PIX11/The Hill Opinion survey Cuomo was found with 38% support in the Democratic primary, but New York State Legislature member Zoran Mamdani came in second place with just 10%.
“You know, Andrew leads the vote for reasons. That’s not name recognition,” the News Nation host added. “That’s because when you see people’s experience living in town, he believes he’s someone who can make it better.”
“It’s also a big name recognition. You’re Cuomos. You’re like the royal family of New York,” replied Maher. “Your father was the governor. Your brother was the governor. Of course, that’s name recognition.”
The News Nation host said the excellence of the former governor means that New Yorkers “know the controversy too,” and Maher agreed.
The comedian further said he believes mayoral competition is made up of “weak fields” that benefit the former governor.
New York mayor Eric Adams, a former Democrat, announced Thursday that he will seek re-election as an independent candidate in his city’s mayoral election. Adams received just 8% support in the March poll.
Issues related to changing nursing home data during the pandemic occurred in May 2020 when the Daily Courner News Foundation reported that it manipulated data to improve the governor’s image.
ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith asked the former governor in March about allegations of liability for the crisis and inadequate counting, but he did not express any guilt and defended the record.
“How many people died in every 100 nursing homes? New York is number 38, which means they have a lower mortality rate than New York,” the former governor said. “And that’s saying something, Stephen, you know, because we had it first, the other states had months to prepare. It’s just falling from the sky for New Yorkers. But those are the numbers of the federal government.”
“Nursing Home Mortality Rate – Ranked 38th. I wanted to be number 50, but only 38 states had low mortality,” he continued. “New York officials, health officials, say they didn’t just do their job, they did well.”
The former governor reported in August 2021 that, following an Attorney General Lettia James report, he reportedly sexually harassed 11 women, including state troopers assigned to his protective details. He was not responsible for the charges, but the New York State government argued that if he takes office it would not be able to prioritize the Covid-19 pandemic.
