During National Travel & Tourism Week, the Greater Birmingham Convention and Visitors Bureau (GBCVB) announced that tourism in Jefferson County generated an impressive $25.7 billion in 2024, with a significant economic impact of $2.57 billion.
This announcement was made at the GBCVB’s annual luncheon, where leaders discussed the strengths of Birmingham’s tourism sector. They noted that tourism activities last year supported over 51,000 jobs and brought in $320 million in tax revenue for the community. Furthermore, more than 4 million overnight visitors came to Birmingham, marking the highest number since 2017.
As part of the festivities, the GBCVB introduced a new Tourism Hall of Fame to honor those who have greatly contributed to local tourism. Alabama Senator Jabo Wagoner (R-Vestavia Hills) was named the inaugural inductee, recognizing his decades of service and advocacy.
John Oros, GBCVB’s President and CEO, along with CEO Jean Holman, commended Wagoner for his pivotal role in the region’s tourism infrastructure. They highlighted his defense of the law that created the Department of Convention and Visitors back in 1969. Since 1993, Wagoner has served on the board of directors and has chaired the board as well. Beyond his involvement with GBCVB, he has been instrumental in attracting major sporting events to the area and has contributed notably to the renovation of the BJCC and the development of UAB.
Wagoner expressed his appreciation for the honor and reflected on his lengthy involvement with the Bureau, mentioning that being a part of the board is one of his most cherished affiliations. He looks forward to each monthly meeting and described the Hall of Fame award as significant, stating it would proudly be displayed at home.
The event also served as a significant moment as GBCVB’s CEO John Oros was recognized for his decade-long leadership prior to his retirement later this year.
These acknowledgments emphasize the ongoing vision to uplift local tourism and celebrate individuals who have laid the groundwork for future success.
