‘Black Panther’ Actress Connie Chiume Dead At 72

“Black Panther” actress Connie Chiume died on Tuesday at age 72 in a hospital in Johannesburg, South Africa, according to a social media post from her family.

Chiume's family confirmed her death in a statement sent to her official contacts. Instagram page“The Chiume family is saddened to announce the passing of internationally acclaimed and award-winning actress Connie Chiume,” the statement read. “Connie Chiume passed away today, August 6, 2024, at Garden City Hospital. The family asks that their privacy be respected during this difficult time. Further details will be announced by the family.”

Kiume's son, Nonjelo Kiume, spoke briefly to South African news network Newsroom Africa, saying his father had been “admitted to hospital for medical procedures” before his death.

“She was recovering well but unfortunately today we heard the news that she has passed away,” Nonjelo said, before his phone lines appeared to go dead. He added that he could not “confirm” the cause of her death.

Nonjelo made a final request on behalf of the family.

“We want her to be remembered as someone who gave everything she had with her talent. We want her to be remembered as someone who was selfless and believed in the talent that God had given her and always wanted to see the next person succeed,” he said.

The South African government paid tribute to Chiume on X (formerly Twitter).

“Our deepest condolences go out to the family, friends and colleagues of legendary award-winning actress Connie Chiume. Her incredible work will be forever remembered. #RIPConnieChiume,” the statement said.

Chiume, a former teacher, won two South African Film and Television Awards during his career. according to She is reportedly best known for playing tribal leader Zawavari in 2018's “Black Panther,” according to IMDb.
