High school officials near Boston asked Massachusetts Democratic Gov. Maura Healey to deploy the National Guard to combat rising violence and drug use, according to a letter.
A majority of the Brockton School Committee asked for help, citing safety concerns stemming from verbal abuse of staff, drug use and fights in the hallways, the Associated Press reported. report. Brockton Mayor Robert Sullivan forwarded the request to Healy in his capacity as committee chair.
“Over the past few months, our high schools have seen an alarming increase in incidents related to violence, safety concerns, and substance abuse,” said committee members Claudio Gomez and Anna Oliver. “Instances of students wandering the hallways, starting fights, and causing disruption in classrooms have become alarmingly common. These incidents not only undermine the learning environment, but also jeopardize the integrity of the testing process across the state. “As School Committee officials, we are reaching out to you in hopes that the city and state can provide assistance and support to address this urgent issue.” Gomez, Oliver, Rodriguez, Asak wrote.
“Over the past few weeks, there has been a noticeable increase in the number of students leaving school grounds without proper authorization. This unauthorized departure is the result of a lack of sufficient personnel to effectively monitor entrances and exits.” It is written in the letter.
Committee members said the National Guard could replace hall monitors and teachers. Opponents of the proposal said the National Guard is not the answer.

“Soldiers in field uniforms are not the answer,” said City Councilman Winthrop Farwell Jr. Posted On facebook. “Convene a committee of classroom teachers (rather than administrators) and have that committee provide input and recommendations on how to address escalating problems in your school.”
“Teachers in the classroom are the closest people to their students,” Farwell continued. “Choose educators who are independent-minded, not those who want to 'curry favor' with school administrators. We all have the gift of creating a positive learning environment if we listen to our teachers. They care and know they can help us succeed. ”
At a January meeting on CBS Boston, school teachers tearfully asked for help. report.
“This year has killed me,” Brockton High School teacher Julie Fairfield told the committee. according to to the local CBS affiliate station. “For the last month, I've been one of those teachers that calls me probably twice a week.”
