Board votes to terminate Arizona fire chief

Chief Scott Freitag was censured last month by the International Association of Firefighters.

YAVAPAI COUNTY, Ariz. — The Central Arizona Fire Medical Board voted Monday to terminate the contract of Chief Scott Freitag, who was recently criticized by the firefighters union.

The board voted 3-2 to fire Freitag after accusations that he had intimidated union members and failed to meet minimum staffing standards, allegations that Freitag had previously denied.

Don Jongeward, president of the Arizona Association of Professional Firefighters, praised the commission's decision after Monday's meeting.

“What we've heard time and time again is that they want to see CAFMA move forward,” Jongeward said in a statement. “They want police departments to put more resources in the field and make 911 calls faster and more efficient.”

Last month, the International Association of Fire Fighters voted to censure Freitag over the allegations.

A letter of support for Freitag was submitted to the CAFMA board before Monday's meeting, describing him as a “pillar of leadership” in the community.

CAFMA District It covers more than 300 square miles of Yavapai County in the Chino Valley and Prescott Valley areas.
