Boat Builders expand their shipbuilding activities in Alabama with a $7.8 million project.

Master Boat Builders Inc., a vessel and workboat manufacturer, has announced a significant investment of $7.8 million aimed at modernizing and expanding its shipbuilding operations in Mobile County. This project includes the addition of a new fabrication shop and a floating dry dock.

According to the Mobile Chamber, the expansion has led to the creation of 85 new jobs, further enhancing the skilled workforce at the master boat company, which now has over 300 employees. This move not only supports the company but also boosts Mobile County’s reputation in shipbuilding and maritime services.

“This investment enhances our ability to produce high-quality vessels while demonstrating our commitment to increasing U.S. shipbuilding capacity right here on the Gulf Coast,” a company representative stated.

The expansion initiative involves constructing new manufacturing facilities. The floating dry dock is expected to support contracts for new ports, workforce training programs, and infrastructure improvements.

This development is crucial for the region’s ongoing workforce development and training, reflecting the increasing demand for skilled labor in maritime and shipbuilding fields.

“The growth of Master Boat Builders highlights the ongoing momentum of Alabama’s maritime industry and cements Mobile County’s status as a shipbuilding and repair hub,” noted Ellen McNair, secretary of the Alabama Department of Commerce.

She added, “This investment not only generates quality job opportunities but also bolsters local capabilities to support key economic sectors in the state.”

Shipbuilding Leadership

Construction for this expansion is scheduled to commence in October 2024, with full operational status expected by October of next year.

“The maritime industry in Mobile continues to flourish, and this investment in Master Boat Builders reinforces our local leadership in shipbuilding,” commented Bradley Byrne, president and CEO of the Mobile Chamber. “By generating new jobs, preserving existing ones, and focusing on workforce development, this initiative exemplifies the growth of our business community alongside the thriving ports and maritime economy.”

Randall Duquit, the Mobile County Commissioner for District 3, mentioned that Master Boat Builders is a third-generation, locally owned shipyard with 45 years of history and serves as a major employer in the area.

“This expansion not only secures and creates jobs for families in our community, but it also reaffirms Mobile County’s leadership in shipbuilding and maritime innovation for the future,” he said.
