Boat capsizes in Navajo canyon, leaving 3 dead and 2 hospitalized

PHOENIX — Two children and an elderly person were killed when a boat capsized Saturday in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, trapping passengers underneath, according to the Coconino County Sheriff's Office.

Park rangers were called to the incident near the entrance to Navajo Canyon at approximately 3:15 p.m. and saw a passenger on top of a 25-foot pontoon boat that had capsized. Several of the 11 passengers are missing. The cause of the capsize was believed to have been caused by waves while another boat was towing the boat.

Other crew members helped rescue the missing passengers.

Two four-year-old boys and a 72-year-old woman died. Two other patients were hospitalized, one of whom was transported by helicopter.

The National Park Service is investigating the incident along with the Coconino County Sheriff's Office and the coroner.
