Authorities said the bodies of a couple who went missing after their car was caught in flooding in the Payson area were found on Thursday.
A Gila County sheriff’s official said crew members were working to recover the bodies. The couple’s names and ages were withheld until their identities were confirmed and relatives were notified.
Authorities had previously said the couple were believed to be Bear Flat locals.
Search and rescue teams were dispatched to the scene Wednesday morning after county officials received a 911 call about a pickup truck spotted in Tonto Creek.
The vehicle was located about 100 yards downstream from a creek crossing about 18 miles (29 km) east of Payson.
Sheriff officials said the search operation was complicated and dangerous because of weather conditions and flooding.
Involved in the search were the Hell’s Gate Fire Department, Tontrim Search and Rescue, Payson Police Department, and the Arizona Department of Public Safety. )
Flooding caused by recent rainfall and snowmelt has caused problems in parts of central and northern Arizona, prompting residents of several lowland communities in Yavapai County to be evacuated.
On Wednesday, firefighters from Camp Verde, Cave Creek and Ash Fork rescued those caught in the flood waters, with several rescues reported. No injuries have been reported.
